Review: The Look by Sophia Bennett

The Look by Sophia Bennett

Name: The Look
Author: Sophia Bennett
Author's website: http://sophiabennett.com/
Publisher: The Chicken House
Date published: 2012
Number of pages: 328
Rating: 5/5
When is it available: Now

The Look is about a girl called Ted, she has a lot going on in her life. When the story starts Ted is fifteen and is struggling to fit in at school. She thinks of herself as a freak  and it doesn't help that some people at school think so too. Then suddenly it seems as if the world around her has gone crazy. She's spotted by a model agency. Her beautiful sister falls seriously ill with cancer. What is going on? And will it work out in the end?
This is an amazing story, it made me laugh, it made me cry and it made me speechless. Really, I have no words (in a good way). Okay, well I have to have quite a few words since this is a review, so I'll find some just for you. This story was such a page turner - I really couldn't put it down. Throughout the whole book I wanted to know what was going to happen next.
Sophia Bennett approached the subject of child illness really well and even though I learnt about Lymphoma it wasn't in a boring way - all the information we needed to understand what was going on was woven into the story really well.
This book was truly wonderful, the characters were realistic (I really empathised with Ted and Ava) and I could clearly imagine everything that was happening.  It met and went beyond any expectations I had or could have had about it. It was one of those books I didn't want to finish because the story was so good but when I did finish it I loved the ending. It left me feeling emotional but in a good way.
I want to keep this book forever and ever and read it again and again. I really loved it. It's now one of my favourites and it definetly deserves five out of five.
The cover is fantastic! Another thing about the book that I love. It's bright and colourful and really catches your eye. It really tells you about the story as one of the key parts of said story is about what people think of their own looks and others' looks.
Oh, and the pink pages? Genius.

Thank you for reading my first review! I hope you enjoyed it. Expect more like it soon. Have a great day.

Blissfull happiness

I got the books that my mum ordered me from The Book People. I think I may be in love with The Book People. That is the only place where I can get 13 BOOKS FOR £15. Seriously. AND GUESS WHAT BOOKS I GOT.
So I got all three Threads books in a set for only £4.99! Which I'm really excited about and I can't wait to read. Then I got a ten Katie Fforde books for only £9.99 which is an amazing deal. I also can't wait to read these. My mum is amazing.
Hopefully, I'll be able to do a review on all of these, once I've read and done a review of The Look which I'm reading right now and is amazing and I definetly recommend it to EVERY SINGLE PERSON ON THIS PLANET.

I GOT THE LOOK!

So, today, as you can probably tell, I GOT THE LOOK! (In all it's pink-paged glory). I am very happy. I was in the city because I'd had a taster day at the local 6th form college and I had a little while until the bus so I nipped into WHSmith and I had my World Book Day voucher with me so I thought "I should buy a book". Then I saw The Look on the shelf and thought "I shall buy it, I shall read it and I SHALL LOVE IT". So that's what I did. I've read one chapter of it already and it's already really good. Expect a review when I've read it.

Fashion

Hello! Today I thought I'd do a random post about fashion, so lets talk about fashion.
I love fashion and just clothes in general. There's so many different ways you can wear things and it can be so creative. At the minute my favourite piece of clothing is my prom dress. I'm so excited for prom! It's not untill July 12th but I like to be prepared. My dress is perfect. I think I may be in love with it. It's purple-y blue-y and sparkly and, AAHH, so amazing.
What have you guys got to say about clothes, fashion, style, etc.?

Story for you!

So a little while ago I posted that a story that I'd sent off had been published in a magazine, and that I was very happy about it. Well, today I thought I might aswell post it on here for you guys to have a read! I hope you like it :)

Through my eyes

“Oh my god, I’m so annoyed. I was two marks off an A* on that paper.” my friend Rochelle moaned.
We were sitting at a table in the library, I was struggling with my maths homework and she, having breezed through her homework, was flicking through a magazine.
“What paper was that then?” I said absent-mindedly, I wasn’t really paying attention. The maths homework was really difficult and I was trying to concentrate. Rochelle was annoying me actually – I was trying to work and she was complaining about getting an A when she wanted an A*. Not exactly sympathetic.
“A science paper we did in the lesson.” Rochelle answered. “Isn’t it so annoying when you get such a small amount off an A*?”
“I wouldn’t know.” I mumbled through clenched teeth while gripping my pen so hard it nearly broke. Rochelle was frustrating me.
“This is the second time it’s happened to me. I don’t understand why I keep missing those few marks, I mean…”  I slammed my pen down and she stopped talking. The librarian frowned at me.
“Could you just stop?” I whispered angrily.
“What do you mean Charlie?” She frowned as she whispered back.
“I mean you should try seeing things from my point of view! Through my eyes! How do you think I feel when you’re sitting there complaining about getting an A while I’m struggling to get a C?” I whispered as loudly as I could without getting another frown from the librarian. “Now either go away or shut up.”
Rochelle just sat there in stunned silence, I suppose I’d never really spoken out like that before. It felt good to let it all out and it worked too – she’s started being more sympathetic to me and that’s because she saw it through my eyes.

Well that's the story, I hoped you enjoyed reading it!

P.S. I also hope you like the new look for the blog, I thought there's a new book out, it's called the look, this calls for a new look.

Late night (for me) writing

I really want to write something, because I don't feel like I write enough for this blog, but my brain's just gone blank and it's ten to ten at night. This may not be late to the rest of you but it's late to me, if I go to bed after midnight then I feel awful in the morning, I just feel so tired. So I try to go to bed before then. Anyway, what should I write? What do you guys like to read? Here's a list of stuff that I could do,say if you prefer any of them:
- Book reviews (I've never really done many before but if you want to read them then I'll write some)
- Random articles (e.g. on issues raised in Threads or something like that)

Or if any of you have an ideas then it would be great if you could post them. I'm in a bit of a writer's block. Thanks :)
Untill next time,
Beccy xoxo

Many new posts and lots of news and stuff...

There's a new post on Nonie's world :

Joseph Kony – Nonie says Ew

It was because of what Joseph Kony did in Uganda that Threads became the book it was. He created the Lords Resistance Army that forced thousands of Uganda’s boys to become child soldiers, and its girls to become slaves. It is estimated that he has caused over 2 million people to be displaced. And in 2008, it was my anger at what he was doing that created the background of Crow, and Edie’s campaign to help her.
Right now, the campaign against him is all over the internet, called Kony 2012 and run by Invisible Children – whom I mentioned in Threads, and who are still going. Watch the video if you can. See what committed young people can do.
This is what Wikipedia had to say on the subject:
Kony received a surge of attention in early March 2012 with the release of “Kony 2012“, a thirty minute documentary, was made by filmaker Jason Russell for the campaign group Invisible Children Inc. The film’s aim is to make Joseph Kony famous, since fame would justify the United States getting involved in Kony’s capture. Michael Geheren, blogger for The Huffington Post, commented: “The 27-minute video was posted on Vimeo and YouTube by Invisible Children and became a worldwide trending topic on the Internet.. Personally, I have never seen an outpour of support from people on my Facebook news feed like this.”[21]
The Telegraph online mentioned the video, pointing out that it quickly received attention from celebrities.[22]. Elizabeth Flock, writer for the Washington Post, offered more background on the LRA as well as Invisible Children in response to the documentary.[23] Flock and The Toronto Star also mentioned that Invisible Children hoped to raise Kony’s notoriety enough to provoke an overnight postering on April 20.
